George Russell
George Russell is a British Formula 1 driver racing for Mercedes-AMG Petronas. Born 15 February 1998, he was promoted from Williams to Mercedes in 2022 and has emerged as one of the most consistent qualifiers and race-day operators on the current grid. He is second in the 2026 Drivers' Championship behind teammate Kimi Antonelli.
2026 season at a glance
Russell holds second in the 2026 Drivers' Championship with 80 points through the Canadian Grand Prix, 20 points behind Mercedes teammate Kimi Antonelli[2]. The Canadian Grand Prix saw Russell retire from a strong position with an engine failure while Antonelli won, extending the gap between the two Mercedes drivers.
Background
- Born 15 February 1998 in King's Lynn, Norfolk, England[1]
- British
- F1 debut: 2019 Australian Grand Prix, Williams
- Joined Mercedes in 2022 partnering Lewis Hamilton
- Inherited the senior driver role at Mercedes for 2025 when Hamilton moved to Ferrari
Career arc
Russell's reputation built through three difficult Williams years (2019-2021) was that of a driver delivering performance well beyond his car. The standout result was the 2020 Sakhir Grand Prix where he substituted for Hamilton at Mercedes, qualified on the front row, and led much of the race before a pit-stop error and tyre failure cost him the win[1].
The Mercedes move came in 2022. Through 2022-2024 he developed alongside Hamilton, then took the senior role at the team in 2025 partnered with rookie Antonelli. The 2025 season was Russell's strongest to date in raw results. The 2026 season has been a championship-pace year compromised so far by the rookie alongside him producing once-a-generation form.
Driving style
:::analysis Russell is regarded as one of the strongest qualifying drivers on the current grid, particularly in mixed conditions. His race-day craft has matured significantly since his Williams years, and his ability to manage tyre stints across a full race is now in the top tier of the grid.
The challenge of 2026 has been internal rather than external: he is partnered with a younger teammate producing record-setting form. The gap to Antonelli is meaningful but not insurmountable, and Russell's experience in long-stint race execution is the strongest tool he has for closing it over the back half of the season. :::
Monaco 2026 context
Russell has yet to win the Monaco Grand Prix in his career. The combination of Mercedes' current pace advantage (front-running car) and his strong qualifying record makes 2026 one of his strongest realistic chances. As with every Monaco weekend, the deciding session is qualifying (see why Monaco qualifying matters more than the race).
